BioCycle and the University of California, Davis Agricultural Sustainability Institute are excited to announce: “Compost Use In Agriculture: Healthy Soils, Sequestering Carbon,” on Monday, March 30, 2020. This half-day Healthy Soils Program Workshop at the UC Davis Russell Ranch (12:30 PM—4:30 PM) kicks off the BIOCYCLE CONNECT West 2020 Conference, March 30 — April 2 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Sacramento.
The Workshop starts with discussions about carbon farming and the role compost plays in increasing carbon sequestration, and examines compost effects on soil health indicators in the long term. There will be an exciting Lightning Round of short presentations by Masters and PhD students, covering various inputs — compost, biochar, cover crops — and their effects on soil aggregation, carbon sequestration and microbial communities. Included is a recent study on modeling compost distribution. A case study on a new project that is evaluating compost application on a county property to sequester carbon also will be presented. Demonstrations include a compost spreader calibration and how to measure soil carbon.
