Energy Vision, a biogas advocacy organization, released the 2023 update to a database of renewable natural gas (RNG) projects in the U.S. Researchers from Argonne National Laboratory developed the database, which Energy Vision manages, to provide a comprehensive list of biogas projects that are upgrading gas for pipeline injection or use as vehicle fuel (whether locally or at the end of a pipeline). The latest update, done in August 2024, found that by the end of 2023, there were 305 RNG facilities in operation (up from 275 in 2022 and 230 in 2021), 126 under construction, and 111 in various stages of planning — a total of 542 projects of all stages. As of year-end 2023, the operational RNG facilities were able to produce enough fuel to displace nearly 843 million gallons of diesel fuel annually, enough to power 96,900 refuse trucks — more than half of all those on U.S. roadways. RNG production capacity grew 22% compared to two years earlier. Although a handful of Canadian projects deliver RNG into the U.S., all projects listed in the database are in the United States.
